When I first started with TrailsforYouth.Org (TYO) there wasn’t any girls-only categories for the mountain bike races, and TYO started offering them locally. I learned how to race and I rode all the time with TYO. I was hired as a Jr. Counselor when I was 16 and I started to compete in state mountain bike races that had just started. At first there weren’t many girls racing, but two years later there was full field of racers from all across Virginia and competition was tough. But with my coaches, bike and training, after two years, I became the state high school champion. I now race on the Fort Lewis College mountain bike team and received a scholarship through my efforts. With a bike and TYO that gave me wings I would never have gotten the state championship, let alone gained the confidence in myself and my abilities to work for something and make it happen. Now I teach other girls how to succeed and use the bike to give them wings.
