Out of the endless amounts of traits I have gained from being an athlete, the one I find most important is knowing how to be a team player. Growing up through sport allows countless girls the chance to be part of a team atmosphere, just like it did for me. Sports, whether it was town, high school, or collegiate, helped me realize the importance of supporting others while also supporting yourself.

The support system I got from being on a team… it’s almost impossible to put into words the positive effect it had on my character. The woman I have become today, I owe it all to the experiences and opportunities I got through sport.

I recently read an article that stated, “By age 14, girls are dropping out of sports at two times the rate of boys.” For the sake of young women athletes, it is important that we speak up and help out so that this statistic will be no longer. Girls deserve the same experience in sport as boys do: to obtain the confidence, leadership and teamwork skills that will lead them to their success, wherever that takes them. I am blessed to be the person I am today because of sport, and hope that I can help others like myself do the same.
