Leading the Way

Alana Nichols

Six-time Paralympic medalist, first American to win Paralympic gold in both a winter and summer sport, alpine skiing and wheelchair basketball

“Sport teaches girls and women leadership skills, what it feels like to excel and how to set long and short term goals and accomplish them. If people with disabilities are not given the chance to play sports, they may never be able to develop the life skills necessary to reach their fullest potential.  For a very long time, female athletes were a minority but because of the progress and change that has taken place in large part to the work of organizations like the NGWSD Coalition, girls and women have excelled in sport. I am hopeful that one day athletes with disabilities will be the benefactors of the same type of change that female athletes have experienced over the past several decades.”
